Existing Park and Recreation Facilities
There are are 28 formally-designated park, open space, and recreation facilities in Pacific Grove in addition to public school facilities used for recreation. Several other areas constitute open space resources, but are not available for traditional park and recreation use. The system of park and recreation areas can not be assessed according to typical park and recreation standards, due to a number of reasons:
- Several parks are on the coast, making service areas difficult to establish;
- Many parks have natural areas wsith steep topography or substantial tree cover, and thus their recreational use is quite limited;
- The heavy use of the City's coastal parks by vistors makes them de facto "regional parks";
- The Municipal Golf Course (a substantial portion of City park land) serves a specific group;
- Local residents use the Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds.
Shoreline Park Network
The Shoreline Park Network (23.4 acres) includes all parks and recreational areas located on the coastal edge of the city. These facilities serve contiguous neighborhoods, the community as a whole, and regional recreation needs.
Neighborhood & Community Parks
Neighborhood Parks (9.42 acres) are intended to serve the recreation needs of people living or working within a half-mile of the park. Community Parks (134.9 acres) are larger than neighborhood parks and are intended to provide recreational opportunties beyond those supplied by the smaller neighborhood parks.
